All about your Apostille (for FOREIGN couples only)

Most non-english speaking countries require an additional document that certifies that your marriage in Hawaii took place. This document is called an Apostille and it will arrive separately from your marriage certificate, you will receive 2 mailings. You will need BOTH your marriage certificate and the Apostille before heading to your local marriage registrar office to register your marriage back home, wherever that may be.

Here's a short Step By Step Guide:

  1. Fill in the formal Apostille Application.

  2. Fill in the additional Certification of Documents form.

  3. Print out BOTH forms above), FILL them in, SIGN them, AND BRING them to the beach with you when you're getting married. Both, you and your minister will have to sign it!

  4. Make a copy of both of your Passports (you'll need only the page that shows your photo, signature and passport number). Make sure to pack this in addition to the Apostille and 2 envelopes for your travel to Hawaii.

IMPORTANT:

Bring with you on your travel:

1. Copies of your Passports

2. 2 Printed out Apostille forms

3. Two envelopes

Here's what you need to do AFTER you've been married:

Before you can send your Apostille paperwork off you'll need a couple things:

  1. You'll need 2 Envelopes

  2. You'll also need 2 Money Orders, which you can obtain at any US Post Office. On Kauai there are Post Offices in Poipu, Lihue, Kapaa, Kilauea and Hanalei. Simply put "nearby post office" into Google maps and your cell phone will guide you there. Or, ask any local where the closest post office is.

  3. At the post office you'll need to buy 2 Money Orders: one for $12.50 and one for $1.00 (they'll look like the pictures below).

NOW LET'S GET IT ALL MAILED OUT!

  1. You have 2 Envelopes. Address one envelope to yourself, to your home address in your home country, make sure to affix adequate postage for international shipping. The Hawaii State department will use your self addressed envelope to mail you your Apostille in.

  2. Address the other envelope to Vital Records (address below).

  3. Put both signed Apostille forms and the 2 Money Orders, alongside with your self addressed mailing envelope into the second envelope, seal it and mail to: Hawaii Department of Health-Vital Records, P. O. Box 3378, Honolulu, HI 96801

  4. We recommend you buy CERTIFIED MAIL for sending your Apostille papers to the Department of Health. We are told that this way you can track the envelope via the postal service's online tracking system to make sure everything is received by the Department of Health.
